DIY Feeding Toy for Your Cat or Dog: A Fun and Engaging Way to Feed Your Pet

Are you looking for a simple and cost-effective way to make mealtime more exciting for your pet? A DIY feeding toy made from a repurposed plastic container can be a great enrichment tool for both cats and dogs. This homemade feeding toy encourages natural foraging behaviours, slows down eating, and provides mental stimulation.

That is my beloved cat resting by the fireplace...I wanted to include a short video of him playing with his feeding toy, can't find it...so this picture is just temporary one, as soon as I find what I meant to publish here it will be replaced. đŸ™‚

Materials You’ll Need:

  • A sturdy plastic container with a lid (such as a candy tub or similar)
  • A sharp utility knife or scissors
  • Sandpaper (optional, for smoothing edges)
  • Pet treats or dry food

How to Make the Feeding Toy:

1.    Choose the Right Container – Select a thick plastic container with a secure lid. This will allow easy refilling while ensuring durability.

2.    Cut the Feeding Hole(s) – Use a sharp knife to cut one or multiple holes in the container. Each hole should be just big enough for a single piece of kibble or treat to fall out when the toy is rolled. If the hole is too large, too many pieces will come out at once, reducing the challenge.

3.    Smooth the Edges – If the cut edges are rough, use sandpaper to smooth them out and prevent any harm to your pet (I didn’t… I included that point here for aesthetes. who like nice looking things…:) )

4.    Fill the Toy – Place some dry kibble or treats inside, secure the lid, and let your pet enjoy the fun challenge of getting their food!

Observations and Benefits:

For Cats:

  • Cats typically play with the toy when they are hungry, rolling it around to get a treat or two at a time.
  • Many cats do not empty the toy in one go, instead returning to it throughout the day.
  • It helps prevent overeating and keeps them entertained for longer periods.

For Dogs:

  • Dogs may show more enthusiasm and persistence, rolling the toy until all the treats are out.
  • Since dogs are often more food-motivated, they may empty the toy faster than cats, so it’s important to fill it with a smaller amount of feed.
  • If you want to make it more challenging for your dog, try using a larger container with smaller holes or placing obstacles inside to slow down the food release.

Final Thoughts:

This easy-to-make feeding toy is an excellent way to keep your pet engaged while slowing down their eating. It’s also a great way to reuse plastic containers, making it an eco-friendly choice. Whether you have a curious cat or an eager dog, this DIY feeding toy is sure to provide fun and stimulation for your furry friend!
